In 1955, a few prominent Blantyre citizens were brought together to become the FIRST chartered Rotary Club in Malawi, 50 years after Rotary’s creation in 1905. 
At the organization meeting held at Shire Highlands, Peter F. Brereton became the first President of the Rotary Club of Blantyre.  Many of the other charter members went on to play prominent roles in the development of the Club and the city of Blantyre.
